It all seems to be happening so fast. Just a few days ago, Apple unveiled its next-gen smartphones in the form of the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. One of the key highlights of the refined design of the two smartphones was the long-rumoured omission of the 3.5mm headphone jack.
Now, if rumours are to be believed, Samsung might also the ditch the port in its upcoming smartphones. But if the news does turn out to be true, then you might find yourself carrying not one, but two adapters wherever you go.
This is because Samsung is expected to replace the ubiquitous port with its very own proprietary one. If we look at it closely, this might actually be a smart move by the Korean giant... at least from a business point of view. By introducing a new port, Samsung can then control its licensing and even undercut Apple's licensing fee for headphone manufacturers. It can also offer the port to other Android manufacturers at a nominal charge, making the adoption of the new port faster than the Lightning port headphones.
Yes, we'll miss those days when we could buy a pair of headphones and plug those into any phone we liked, be it an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy device. But if these changes do take effect, then it's possible that the future will be full of adapters and different headphones for different devices. Do note that it is said that Samsung is still at the exploratory stage of seeing how viable this move will be. Who knows, this might be the push wireless audio devices have been waiting for since years.
