Apple iOS 10 will be ready to download tonight on iPhones, iPads. Users should see the update appear in the Settings app on their device, and you can download it as an Over-The-Air Update or connect your device to iTunes on a Mac and then install iOS 10.
Those who were on the public beta version of the OS have already got the final build, and tonight the final consumer build will be made available to all. So what are the top new features of iOS 10 that will make it more exciting and fun to use? Here's a quick look at the top new features in details.
iMessages
Apple is revamping iMessage in a big way on iOS 10, and will make this app a lot more fun and useful.
On the more fun side, iMessages now has support for GIFs, animations, stickers, personalised handwritten notes and automatic emoji suggestions. Users will also be able to share videos, photos with text scribbled across them, sort of like Snapchat-style. Apple Pay is also coming to iMessage, though it won't have much relevance for India users since the service has not yet launched here.
Siri
Apple is opening up Siri's SDK to third-party app developers and now the voice-assistant will have a lot more use cases. SiriKit helps developers to design their apps to work with the voice-assistant; soon you'll be able to use Siri to call for an Uber or book a table at a restaurant.
A new report also suggests WhatsApp plans to integrate with Siri in the latest version of the app, and you might be able to reply to WhatsApp messages from Siri itself. Siri will also offer QuickType options adding contextual predictions based on relevant information.
Notifications
iOS 10 comes with richer notification which support 3D Touch integration for apps like Weather, Stocks, Calendar on iPhone 6s, 6s Plus and above. The new 'Raise to Wake' function will automatically wake the screen as you raise your iPhone, without a user having to tap on the display. The Notifications on Lock Screen are now more interactive which displays the entire text, photos, etc and users can get all information from this screen itself.
Photos app
The Photos app will also get an overhaul with Apple introducing Memories. For iPhone users, who keep clicking pictures every time they travel, and then forget to sort them out, this will be an important new addition. Memories will find forgotten occasions from the photo library and put them together into one album based on location, time, etc. Apple says Memories uses artificial intelligence and object recognition to put together and organise these photos. Additionally Live Photos can now be edited, and come with inbuilt stabilisation as well.
Other features
Maps in iOS 10 will be simpler and also offer features like booking a cab from Uber, directions to users on where they are most likely to go next based on calendar settings. However, the last bit is unlikely to come to India. The new Home app will also let users manage all smart accessories in the house, from lights to curtains.
On Privacy, Apple says while it rely more on machine learning to help users, but the operations will be "on-device". Apple says when it comes to identifying people, objects and scenes in Photos, and or powering QuickType suggestions, the operations will take place on the device. it says data sent from Siri, Maps, News etc won't be used to build user profiles, and it will use 'differential privacy' to add noise to this data, so that it can't be linked back to one individual user.
Apple Music has been redesigned, while Apple News app gets a new "For You" section, and support for breaking news notifications and paid subscriptions. Predictive typing now supports multiple languages without switching keyboards. The Phone app adds integration for third-party VoIP calls, voicemail transcription and a new caller ID extension for spam alerts. Users can now collaborate on a Note, while Apple Pay is being extended to websites on Safari.
