The launch of Reliance Jio services last week has triggered a rush of customers in the mobile stores here.
Jio services, which have been launched with complimentary offers such as free unlimited internet access for 90 days, will be sold for free against legitimate identity proofs of buyers. However, independent sellers are cashing in on the enormous demand for new connections to make anywhere between Rs 200 and Rs 500 per sim card.
"Customers, mostly younger generation are getting restless in long queues. They are willing to pay a little extra in exchange of immediate handover," a telecom store owner in Ranchi's Main Road said on Thursday."When we get a connection, it takes five or more days to get activated. The handsets being sold with sim cards are also taking a fortnight for activation," Rahul, a Ranchi student said from a queue at a store in Purulia Road on Thursday evening.
Seizing this opportunity, sellers have activated cards in bulk in the names of their family and friends beforehand. "We have received complaints about sims being sold for cash. Those distributors have been blacklisted," Shamik Chakraverty, a Jio official in-charge of Jharkhand said.source
